If you live in an area where temperatures drop significantly in the winter months, we recommend adding a few small engine maintenance procedures to help keep your equipment running safely and efficiently. Trust us, taking a little extra time can go a long way in the longevity of your machine.

Tip #1: Look for oils with a “W” in the label

Using the right lubrication matters! As temperatures decrease, engine oil can thicken. Replacing it with a thinner oil, like those marked with a “W” for winter, will help it flow more easily. In chilly weather, thin oils can also help the engine start faster.

Synthetic oils will also work well in winter, but whatever you use, make sure it is recommended in the Manufacturer’s Engine Manual for your specific engine.

Tip #2: Keep the gas tank full

By keeping the tank full, you can help eliminate moisture and particles from getting into the tank. And if you use winter-grade fuel and additives, you can help prevent it from freezing.

Note: If you put your engine into storage for the winter, you need to add fuel stabilizer and run the engine to ensure the lines are coated.

Tip #3: Regularly check your equipment and replace small parts

Take a few minutes and check whether you need a new fuel filter and fuel line, spark plugs, belts and other parts before you put the engine to use.

Tip #4: Let it warm up

Consider the engine like a workout and give it time to warm-up before hitting it hard. Let the engine get started slowly and run it for several minutes before you get to work.

Tip #5: Keep a close eye on it when in use

Keep yourself safe and the engine in good condition by stopping the machine, turning off the engine and letting it cool if you hear any unusual sounds or the operating temperature rises.

Tip #6: Winterize your small engine when not in use

If you finish up your work before the winter is over be sure to winterize your engine for storage. Check out these steps to get you started: Caring For Your Small Engine in Winter.
